We’ve had a fantastic month hosting Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms volunteers, aka WWOOFers.

Joel and Rachel from Chicago Dhante and Ben from Madison and Ford from, well, wherever the wind blows him! They were interesting, engaging people eager to learn and work. We’re feeling very lucky!

We were able to

  • fertilize (with chicken manure) and mulch all of the orchards – Asian Pears, chestnuts, serviceberries and paw paws
  • feed the Japanese walnuts with minerals
  • re-set the weed barrier for the honeyberries
  • renovate the small pond
  • build new beds to reduce mower and gas usage
  • plant new pears and persimmons
  • install a new rainwater recapture system
  • dismantle and salvage old mushroom log pallets
  • set up for splitting and stacking more firewood (the logsplitter needed repair, unfortunately)
  • clean out the firepits for campers
  • fill in farm roads and the spillway for the big pond
  • put up the summer signage for hikers and campers
  • find a beekeeper!

We have one more WWOOFer coming before we take a break in May. In the meantime, we celebrate these folks. Without them, the blood pressure would be high and the work lonely.
