<p>Another nice surprise was a decent little harvest of gourds from our Milpa field. The friend who gave us the seeds said we planted them too densely. Good thing we get another chance next year! But these survived frost and the flail mower. </p>

<p>We did get to enjoy a pretty decent chestnut harvest, but this time the campaign allowed deer to get to more than we would’ve liked. </p>

<p>We finally put the gardens away in November, thankful for the late arrival of winter, and discovered this fellow on the landscape cloth. </p>

<p>This year we were very busy in September and October with major events – our first bout with COVID and the elections. Suzan recovered relatively quickly and was very involved helping a candidate in a local race. It took Paul, who has COPD, longer than most to recover but we’re all better now.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, COVID struck just as our pears were coming in. Suzan was able to harvest them but not host our Nature Farm guests to come get some. Instead, a kind fellow member of the Unitarian Universalist church picked them up and distributed them there.</p>

<p>We were able to enjoy a few small things at the farm. One was our first flush of Chestnut mushrooms!</p>

<p>We had a wonderful time hosting our guests from the ARC of Southeast Iowa. Most of our intrepid guests hiked through the woods, up and down slopes and through large ravines to experience nature. Others hung out by the river and started a little fire in the fire pit.</p>
<p>Lil Bit was a big hit with some while others preferred to learn as much as they could about the place. We enjoyed them immensely! What a great way to share Draco Hill!</p>

<p><strong>It’s Spring time and the babies are bursting out all over. </strong>Our young chicken flock is learning how to roost. Pears, plums, honeyberries, apples, mulberries and grapes are setting on the trees and vines. No peaches this year after a bumper crop last year, no surprise. </p>
<p><strong>Please join us </strong>in wonder at what the natural world offers us every day. Bird walk with the Iowa City Bird Club Saturday, May 18! <a href="https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C084FA9A728A6FCC61-48652231-nature">Sign up</a> or show up! We still have room. All events are free. </p>

<p><strong>We have 13 chicks remaining from our original 14. </strong>They’re getting big and some are roosters so if you’re looking for one of those, <a href="https://dracohill.org/about/contact-us/" data-type="page" data-id="735">contact us</a>! The Copper Mama of the larger brood is the Boss Lady of the coop while the Big Black Mama is the sweet, gentle one who just tries to keep her 4 babies safe. </p>
<p>Thought we’d just share one cute photo of a baby and an impressive photo taken by a member of the Iowa City Camera Club of one of our roosters. </p>
