Where the Chicks are Free!

At Draco Hill that means it’s the day our chicks are put into Gen Pop, (General Population in Orange-is-the-new-Black Lingo). Last night we opened the coop they’ve been staying in with their Mama – she incubated them with no help from us – after weeks of care and chick feed.

They went for the mulberry growing through the fencing first, then peeked off the balcony. Once they were brave enough to get on the ground, the old rooster let them know where they were allowed to be and not allowed to be – such is the nature of pecking orders – but eventually he went up to roost and they got their first taste of grown up food and their first feel of ground under their feet.

In another week or so, we’ll supervise opening up the pen and letting them out in the presence of our dogs, one of whom has never seen chicks and the other who has probably forgotten since it’s been so long.
