Seeking 2024 Farm Intern

Draco Hill Nature Farm is offering this part-time, flexible opportunity to a passionate, handy, self-directed intern for 1 to 6 months.

Starting immediately, the intern will

  • learn how to prune and tend fruit and nut orchards
  • learn how to work a chainsaw and log splitter safely
  • operate both a four-wheel and two-wheel tractor
  • help make basic improvements on farm infrastructure
  • learn how to freeze-dry, dehydrate and can food
  • help burn prairie fields
  • tend a small flock of chickens
  • help tend the annual vegetable and Milpa garden
  • learn how to manage timber and much more!

In addition, we’ve just launched an innovative effort to educate the public through free on-farm events and product sales. You will participate in marketing and hosting an agritourism enterprise that emphasizes people over profit. See our invitation to the public: https://dracohill.org/events/  More than 75 people registered in the first 48 hours!

Accommodations
You’ll get a parking space, private room, full bathroom and a kitchen of your own. We provide three meals a day. While the internship is unpaid, we estimate the value of room and board at $1,000/mo. in this area.

Draco Hill is 75 acres located on the Cedar River approx. 25 miles from Iowa City and 40 miles from Cedar Rapids and Davenport, providing ample opportunity to swim, fish, relax and enjoy many festivals and other events in local cities and towns.

Work Expectations
If we stay on top of the work, long days will be seldom and days off regular. We’ll develop our task list every morning. This is a collaboration. Your work host Suzan will be outside working with you most of the time while your home host Paul will have meals ready for us every day.

Our Values
We value hard work, good conversation and progressive thinking. We enjoy teaching about regenerative farming and managing timber and prairie. We also enjoy learning from others. While Draco Hill is not a production farm yet, we hope someday the land will provide low-cost, low-risk opportunities for new farmers to learn how to grow fruits, vegetables and livestock in a regenerative way.

How to apply
Send a letter to suzan@lastdraft.com that includes why you think this is a good fit for both of us and describing relevant skills and experience. Include 3 references with phone numbers. We will follow up promptly.
