Yesterday we went to one of Tom Wahl and Kathy Dice’s field days at Red Fern Farm. They grow chestnuts, aronias, paw paws, persimmons and various other nursery stock. They are located just south of Muscatine and not far from the Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge.
We learned just enough to egg us on to finally get some hardy kiwis and get serious about treating our aronia bushes right. They are a fraction of the size of Tom’s and we now have confirmed it’s because of too much root competition with the grasses around them. We also met some great people and had a good time walking around Tom and Kathy’s orchards.
They have regular field days – contact them directly for more information about the next one!
